In the tradition of Jagannath, seva is an expression of devotion, humility, responsibility, and love. Through service, generations remain connected to the divine heritage of Sri Jagannath.

The Daitas are a community of servitors associated with the deities of Sri Jagannath Temple, whose duties come especially to the fore during the festival period. Their service is traditionally described in terms of closeness and care rather than formal office.

Seva is the practical form devotion takes. It asks for presence, punctuality, and attention to detail — qualities that cannot be performed for an audience, because most of the work is unseen.

To serve is to accept a smaller place willingly. In the Jagannath tradition, the sevak does not stand between the devotee and the deity; the sevak simply keeps the way open.

Children of servitor families learn by accompanying their elders. What is transmitted is not only procedure but temperament: patience, restraint, and an instinct for what the moment requires.
